D.R.A.W. Methodology

The D.R.A.W. methodology is a simple but powerful way to manage work when a full agile framework is not in place or needs reinforcing. D.R.A.W. stands for:

**Detail/Description**
Capture all the relevant details about a piece of work in one place. Record what needs to be done, who asked for it and why, and include any references, links or attachments. This becomes the single source of truth for the team.

**Risk(s)**
Consider potential risks associated with the work item. Look at complexity, integration points, performance or customer impact. Not all risks are obvious at first – reviewing the Detail, Work Items and Acceptance criteria helps surface them early so they can be mitigated.

**Acceptance**
Define what success looks like. Acceptance criteria describe the conditions under which the work is considered complete and ready for release. Clear criteria allow testers and business stakeholders to validate the outcome.

**Work Items**
Break the work into smaller, actionable tasks and link them back to the Detail. Each sub‑task should have its own estimate and owner. Connecting tasks to the main record ensures traceability from requirement to delivery and testing.

This approach complements agile principles by making each piece of work a self‑contained, testable unit. When used alongside tools like Azure DevOps, D.R.A.W. provides clarity and accountability: details are stored in Wiki pages, risks are logged and tracked, acceptance criteria are used for testing and UAT, and work items are created and managed in the backlog. The result is a transparent process where everyone knows what to do and how success will be measured.

We follow the D.R.A.W. approach in our consulting engagements to ensure nothing is missed and every requirement is well understood, risk assessed, and deliverable. It can be applied to projects of any size and combined with other methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban.
